Perm hosts the Martin McDonagh Theatre Festival
The Martin McDonagh Theatre Festival will run at the “U Mosta” Theatre on October 7-14 featuring 14 performances by theatres from Russia, Austria, Germany, Poland, the Czech Republic, and Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Chekhov Moscow Art Theatre’s sensational staging of The Pillowman will be the highlight of the festival.
The festival starts with a presentation of the Russian translation of The Theatre and Films of Martin McDonagh (October 7, 18:20). The new hall of the “U Mosta” plays host to the Irish Museum throughout. The official festival opening ceremony begins at 19:00.
It is no coincidence that Perm was chosen to be the first city to hold this event – the “U Mosta” Theatre discovered this author for Russia and is the only theatre in the world that has staged all of his seven plays.
The Lonesome West (staged by Sergei Fedotov) received a Golden Mask National Theatre Award nomination and was shown in Moscow as one of the best Russian performances in 2008. In 2010 the “U Mosta” Theatre won the special jury’s award at the Golden Mask National Theatre Festival.
The festival will also feature screenings of films by Martin McDonagh, and seminars, master classes and lectures by well-known Russian and foreign directors. One of the master classes will be given by Andrew Flynn, a famous director and founder of the Decadent Theatre Company, who worked with Martin McDonagh for many years.
